The conference is the final academic event of an interdisciplinary Research Training Group that has been funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) for almost nine years now.

The intellectual point of departure of this endeavour has been the observation that globalization is characterized by dialectics of de- and reterritorialization and that it is of great benefit to focus on particular moments, places, and social arenas where these processes are negotiated. We call them hypothetically “critical junctures of globalization” (Bruchzonen der Globalisierung).

Over the course of the last nine years, some 50 PhD students have been trained by a team of scholars who work in the fields of political science, sociology, history, area studies ranging from Africa via South and East Asia as well as East and Western Europe to the Americas, cultural studies, and theatre studies.

The final conference is meant to bring together the expertise of those who have completed their PhD dissertations and will be able to look back at the achievements from a further developed academic agenda, of those who are working on their manuscripts to be finalized soon, and external experts who relate their own approaches to the concept of critical junctures of globalization.
