Böhme, Claudia

Under the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) program “Welcome to Africa”, annual funding will be made available for bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students for the study period from 2012 to 2015. Financial support will be provided mainly for travel expenses and a small stipend for exchanges at the universities of Stellenbosch, South Africa; Yaoundé, Cameroon; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The DAAD funding will be available through the Institute of African Studies, the international MBA program “Small Enterprise Promotion and Training” (SEPT), the Global and European Studies Institute, the Centre for Area Studies and the Research Academy Leipzig.

While bachelor’s students will primarily take part in the study programs at the African host universities, master’s students will additionally be able to conduct their own research under the supervision of African scholars or partake in traineeships. PhD students will work on their theses while joining the scientific exchange of ideas with colleagues.

The thematic focus of each three-month stay (or one-month stay for PhD candidates only) will be determined by the host universities. Students travelling to Tanzania will pursue primarily the study of language, literature and culture. In Stellenbosch, studies will be centered on global and international studies, culture and language. In Addis Ababa, peace and security will be focused on while in Yaoundé courses in postcolonial studies and the transnational development of culture will be offered.
