The Department of History and Art History seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor in the History of International Relations with a focus on the Global Cold War and/or Global Governance. A proven record in archival research in an international context is an added value. The same applies to knowledge of foreign languages. Likewise, international teaching experience is an advantage, but not a requirement. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the teaching, including curriculum design and course coordination, of both the new Bachelor-track and the Master programme in International Relations in a Historical Perspective.
Teaching and research in the History of International Relations group (chaired by Professor Beatrice de Graaf) are centred on three themes: Conflict and Security; Europe and the World; and Globalisation and Global Governance from a historical perspective. Applicants should show how their research will contribute to at least one of these areas, particularly the one on Globalisation and Global Governance, as well as to the university’s strategic research area Institutions for Open Societies.
The position carries an initial 70% teaching load. Female candidates are especially encouraged to apply.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will preferably have:
- experience teaching undergraduate students at all levels and a commitment to internships;
- a PhD degree in the History of International Relations or a related discipline, with a specialisation in global/non-western history, preferably since the 19th century;
- ability to contribute to research-led postgraduate courses and to assist in the recruitment of postgraduate students;
- a record (appropriate to career stage) of publications that demonstrate the ability to conduct research which is internationally excellent in significance, originality and rigour;
- a realistic medium-term research plan, addressing substantial historical problems and aiming for publications in leading journals, with potential for attracting external research funding;
- readiness to engage with a wider audience and to assist in developing the impact of historical research beyond the university sector;
- ability to play an appropriate role in departmental management and to contribute fully to the academic life of the department.
- Utrecht University has a teaching qualification system for university lecturers, and candidates are required to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) within two years if they are not already in possession of one.
Candidates are expected to be proficient in both Dutch and English; non-Dutch candidates will need to master the Dutch language on an academic level within two years.
Offer
The initial appointment, as from 1 August 2017 at the latest, will be on a temporary basis for a period of one year. Subject to satisfactory performance, this will be followed by a permanent appointment. Salary depends on qualifications and experience and will range from €3,400 to €4,654 (scale 11 Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) gross per month for a full time position. Utrecht University offers a pension scheme, a holiday allowance of 8% per year, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and flexible terms of employment.
